Jackson Metro Area Regional Transit Plan
CMPDD, in cooperation with the City of Jackson and the Mississippi Department of Transportation developed a comprehensive plan for meeting transit needs of the Jackson
Metropolitan Area.
During FY 2003 the District will continue to assist the City of Jackson and other transit providers in implementing the Regional Transit Plan for the Jackson Metropolitan Area,
endorsed by the MPO on May 31, 2000. Services provided by the District will include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following as they are needed:
- Provision of regional transit services for all jurisdictions. The District has begun attempting to develop a connection between the rural transit system operated by the Madison
County Human Resource Agency (MCHRA) and JATRAN, the transit system operated by the City of Jackson. Arrangements will be made for a transfer center in the County Line Road area where
riders using an MCHRA vehicle could transfer from that service to a JATRAN bus, thus improving the efficiency and cost effectiveness of both systems. Also, the District and City of
Jackson personnel have talked with the manager of Dogwood Festival shopping center in Flowood about the possibility of offering transit service along Lakeland Drive between Dogwood
Festival and the University Medical Center. The new service, if implemented, would be called the "Lakeland Local" and would provide transit service for commuters from Rankin County and
for lunch-time riders who would catch a JATRAN shuttle bus from their places of business to go to a restaurant on Lakeland Drive.
- Identification of opportunities for obtaining new sources of funds, such as private business support, especially for innovative new transit services such as the proposed "Lakeland
Local" route described above.
- Preparation and distribution of customer information, materials, and advertising for transit services and development of a marketing program with a central theme for regional
transit.
