Redistricting Assistance
CMPDD, as a census data affiliate, has the official Census 2000 Redistricting Data Summary File for Mississippi. This census population data allows realignment of voting districts,
taking into account population shifts since the 1990 Census and assuring equal representation for constituents in compliance with the "one-person, one-vote" principle of the 1965 Voting
Rights Act.
The prepackaged information distributed by the Department of Commerce is in tabular form and in itself does not allow for computerized redistricting. For most required and practical
applications, this information needs to be attached to and merged with geographic entities on a map and used in conjunction with a digital mapping system, which is a difficult and time
consuming effort that CMPDD has already accomplished. This geographic referenced data is necessary to perform needed governmental analysis, such as redistricting, annexation, land use
planning, infrastructure projections, school enrollment estimates and general population and economic analysis.
Our Data Center and Geographic Information System (GIS) staff have already developed procedures and have merged new census maps with the recently released census data to allow this
office to carry out the functions required by political subdivisions in order to meet their various legal requirements. If you have question or need a particular issue investigated,
do not hesitate to contact Chuck Carr to assist you with your redistricting needs.
