Metropolitan Area Traffic Counting Program
(Click to view Traffic Count Index Map)

For many years the District has been conducting traffic counts as requested by local governments. MDOT performs traffic counts on a cyclical three-year basis on State-maintained highways and on other arterial and collector streets and road throughout the entire State. In addition, some counties and municipalities in the Jackson Metropolitan Area perform their own traffic counts. However, there is a need for a coordinated traffic count data base for the area.

Therefore, beginning in FY 2003, the District will begin implementation of a Metropolitan Area Traffic Count Program. Traffic counters will be deployed by the District staff on selected arterial and collector streets and roads in Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties. The District will coordinate these traffic counts with counts performed by the MDOT and local governments to avoid duplication of effort. The District will begin publication of a traffic count book every year and will place the counts on the District website. The traffic counts collected by the District will be used in several transportation planning activities, including the MULTIPLAN project and future updates of the Jackson Urbanized Area Transportation Plan, maintenance of the Congestion Management System and maintenance of the Pavement Management System.

The District will also continue performing traffic counts as requested by local member governments.
